Working Toward PADI Course Director: Preparing Your CDTC Application with Alpha Divers
The PADI Course Director Training Course (CDTC) is the final step to becoming a PADI Course Director — the highest professional rating in recreational diving. But getting a place on the CDTC isn't automatic. It's a competitive application process, and the preparation that goes into it matters just as much as the course itself. What the CDTC application requires
Requirements are set by PADI and can be updated, so always check the current CDTC application on the PADI Pro Site before you apply — but broadly, to apply you'll need to: Be a renewed, teaching-status PADI Master Instructor (typically for at least six months before your CDTC application/course date). Hold a current EFR Instructor Trainer rating. Have at least 250 logged dives. Have staffed at least two full IDCs as an IDC Staff Instructor. Have no verified Quality Assurance issues within the past 12 months. Show genuine PADI dive centre or resort work experience. Demonstrate commitment to Project AWARE. Pass the CDTC-level exams at an Instructor Exam within the year before applying — the Standards and Procedures exam and the Dive Theory exam, both with high pass thresholds. Submit a business plan setting out how you intend to use the Course Director rating once qualified. Beyond the paperwork, PADI's selection process also looks at your teaching history, your commitment to continuing education, and whether you're genuinely ready to contribute to an Instructor Development Centre or Resort — it's an assessment of readiness, not just a checklist.
