So you've caught the diving bug, and now you're dreaming of turning it into a career. Good news — the path from where you are now to becoming a PADI Instructor is clearer than you might think. Before we dive into the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) together, here's what you'll need to have in place.
You'll need to be a Divemaster
If you've already earned your PADI Divemaster rating, you're most of the way there. And if you trained with a different agency, don't worry — a Divemaster (or equivalent leadership-level) certification from another recognised diving organisation is also accepted, so you can crossover and join the IDC with us. Not quite a Divemaster yet? No problem — talk to us and we'll help map out your route to get there first. You'll need to be 18 or older
Simple as that. Some diving experience under your belt
You'll need at least six months as a certified diver and 60 logged dives to join us for the IDC (including some night, deep, and navigation dives) — with 100 dives total by the time you sit your Instructor Examination. If you're not quite there yet, that's totally normal, and it's a great excuse to log some more incredible dives before training day.A clean bill of health
A medical statement from a physician, confirming you're fit to dive, signed within the past 12 months. We can organise this for you easily in Cyprus for an additional cost.First aid and emergency training
You'll need Emergency First Response (EFR) training within the last 24 months. Don't already have it? We can help you sort that out as part of your journey to becoming an EFR Instructor too — most of our candidates knock this out alongside their IDC.A bit of prep work before you arrive
We'll get you set up with the PADI IDC eLearning ahead of time, so you walk in already familiar with PADI Standards and dive theory — meaning we can spend our time together focused on what really matters: turning you into a brilliant instructor. Not sure if you tick all the boxes yet? That's exactly what we're here for. Get in touch and we'll figure out your best path forward — together.

Training with Paul means getting hands-on, personalised guidance from a Course Director who genuinely cares about your growth — not just ticking boxes to get you through an exam. At Alpha Divers, the IDC is built around real learning, not memorisation.
Each day blends instructor-level theory with practical, in-water skill development. You'll deepen your understanding of dive physics, physiology, and the PADI System, then take that straight into the classroom and the water — practising how to actually teach it. Expect plenty of time refining your presentation skills, running mock lessons with your fellow candidates, and getting honest, constructive feedback that sharpens you as an educator, not just a diver.
Your own dive skills get plenty of attention too. You'll revisit and refine core skills to instructor standard, so you're not only capable of performing them perfectly yourself, but confident demonstrating and correcting them for future students.
Paul's approach is all about "thinking like an instructor" — building the judgement, adaptability, and confidence to handle real teaching situations, not just the ones covered in a manual. By the time you reach your Instructor Exam, you won't just be prepared to pass — you'll be prepared to teach.

You'll need a full set of your own scuba equipment for the IDC — mask, fins, snorkel, exposure suit, BCD, regulator with alternate air source, and a dive computer. You'll also need a compass, DSMB and reel, cutting instrument, and a rescue breathing mask. Having gear you're comfortable and confident in matters more than you'd think when you're focused on teaching, not fiddling with unfamiliar kit.
Don't have everything sorted yet, or would rather not travel with a full set? No problem — we've got quality equipment available both for sale and for rent, so you can turn up ready to train without the hassle. Just let us know what you need and we'll sort you out.

You can work through the IDC using traditional paper manuals or PADI's digital materials on a tablet or laptop, whichever suits how you like to study. Digital versions let you carry everything in one device and search content quickly, while paper works well if you prefer making notes by hand or find screens tiring after a long day of diving.
We'd recommend going digital if you can — it's lighter to travel with, easier to keep organised, and makes referencing material during the course that bit quicker. That said, either format works fine for the IDC — just make sure whichever you choose is fully set up and ready to go before you arrive.

Your IDC starts well before you arrive in Cyprus. To make sure you walk in confident and ready, Paul provides mock exams ahead of time covering both dive theory and PADI Standards, giving you a clear, honest picture of where you're strong and where you need a bit more focus, without the pressure of the real thing.
You'll also have the chance to jump on online calls with Paul before your course begins. Whether you want to talk through a tricky theory topic, get clarity on a standards question, or just ask anything that's been on your mind; these calls mean you're never left guessing or working through it all alone.
By the time your IDC starts, you'll already have a solid grasp of the material, meaning we can spend our time together focused on building your practical teaching skills and confidence, rather than playing catch-up on theory.

Your IDC doesn't just prepare you to teach the core PADI courses — it also includes training across five Instructor Specialties, giving you a real head start to build upon your teaching credentials from day one: Deep, Wreck, DPV, Enriched Air (EANx), and Navigation.
The Deep, Wreck, and DPV specialties are trained on the world-famous Zenobia — one of the top wreck dives in the world, right on our doorstep here in Cyprus. There's no better classroom for these specialties than diving the real thing, giving you practical, memorable experience teaching in exactly the kind of conditions and environment future students will be excited to explore.
These specialties also set you firmly on the road to Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) status; one of the most respected ratings a PADI Instructor can hold. With five specialties already under your belt from the IDC, you're well on your way to meeting the MSDT requirements, placing that significant career milestone within much closer reach.
By building these specialty qualifications into your IDC, you'll leave not just as a newly certified Open Water Scuba Instructor, but with a broader teaching portfolio ready to go; making you a stronger, more employable candidate from the moment you're certified.

Wherever you're at, budget-wise, there's a place to stay that'll work for you during your IDC. Whether you're after something simple and cost-effective or a bit more comfort, we can help point you toward options nearby.
Airbnbs — Plenty of local options if you'd prefer your own space, self-catering, and a bit more flexibility with your daily routine.
Nearby hotels — For those who'd rather have everything taken care of, there are a range of hotels close by to suit different budgets and comfort levels.
Shared room lets — A great way to keep costs down, and often a good chance to bunk with fellow candidates — handy for studying together and building those friendships that carry through the course.
Not sure where to start looking? Just ask — we're happy to point you toward what's worked well for past candidates.

The Instructor Examination is the final step to earning your PADI Instructor rating. It is a two-day evaluation run independently by PADI, assessing your dive theory exam, standards exam, classroom presentation skills, and your teaching ability in both confined and open water.
It's thorough, but by the time you get there, you'll be ready. Everything covered in your IDC directly prepares you for what's assessed on the IE, so there shouldn't be any surprises — just a chance to show what you've learned.
You won't be doing it alone, either. You'll sit the IE alongside your fellow IDC candidates, the same people you've trained, practiced, and problem-solved with throughout the course. Having that support around you makes a real difference — there's a shared understanding of what everyone's been through, and a bit of friendly encouragement goes a long way on exam day.

Passing your IDC is just the start. We're here to help you turn your new instructor rating into an actual career, not just a certification. That means honest advice on where the jobs are, how to make yourself a stronger candidate, and what it really takes to get hired in this industry.
We'll help you put together a CV that stands out to dive centres and resorts, talk through interview prep, and share guidance on choosing the right specialties and additional training to boost your employability. Whether you're hoping to work locally, chase a dive job abroad, or eventually run your own operation, we're happy to help you think through the path that fits what you want.
You've done the hard work getting certified — let's make sure it opens the right doors.
