PADI IDC vs. IDC Internship vs. IDC/IE Business Academy: Which Pathway Is Right for You?
If you're thinking about becoming a PADI Instructor, one of the first things you'll notice is that there isn't just one way to get there. At IDC Cyprus we offer three different pathways, and the right one for you depends on where you're starting from, how much time you have, and what kind of experience you want along the way.
Here's a straightforward look at each.
PADI IDC/IE — the focused two-week route
From €1,299 · Two weeks, inclusive of training
This is the core pathway: the Instructor Development Course itself, followed by your Instructor Examination. It's built for divers who already hold their Divemaster certification and are ready to convert that experience directly into an instructor rating without an extended stay in Cyprus.
Who it suits: Divers who are already well-travelled and experienced, know they want to teach, and would rather train intensively over a focused two weeks than commit to months abroad. It also suits candidates with existing savings set aside specifically for certification, who don't need the internship-style work exposure alongside it.
DC/Internship — three months of training and hands-on experience
From €3,999 · Three months, inclusive of training
This pathway wraps the IDC/IE around a three-month internship at Alpha Divers. Instead of just training toward the exam, you're immersed in the day-to-day of a working dive centre — building real experience alongside your instructor development.
Who it suits: Candidates who want more than a certificate — who want to leave Cyprus with genuine dive centre experience, a stronger diving CV, and the confidence that comes from months of practice rather than weeks. It's a natural fit if you're using this as a career change and want time to actually live the job before committing further.
DC/IE Business Academy — zero to hero in under seven months
From €6,999 · Seven months, inclusive of training
This is the full pathway for those starting from scratch — designed to take you from beginner diver through to instructor level in well under a year, with over 250 logged dives plus PADI fees, materials, and equipment included. Accommodation is available if needed.
Who it suits: Anyone considering a genuine career change into diving who isn't a diver yet, or is early in their diving journey, and wants a single structured programme that removes the guesswork — rather than piecing together separate courses on their own timeline. If you're picturing "I want to move to Cyprus and become a dive professional," this is built for exactly that.
How to decide
A few questions worth asking yourself:
- Am I already a Divemaster, ready to specialise into teaching? → IDC/IE
- Am I qualified but want real dive centre experience before I commit to instructing full-time? → IDC/Internship
- Am I starting from little or no diving experience and want one complete pathway to instructor level? → IDC/IE Business Academy
Every candidate's situation is a little different, and the honest answer often depends on details that don't fit neatly into a blog post — your current certification level, your timeline, your budget, and what you want your life to look like afterward.
If you're not sure which pathway fits, the easiest next step is to talk it through directly.
