Working Toward PADI Master Instructor with Alpha Divers
PADI Master Instructor is unusual among PADI's professional ratings — it isn't a course you take, it's a rating you earn through real teaching experience over time. If it's on your radar as a long-term goal, working alongside Paul at Alpha Divers is one of the most direct ways to build the certifications and experience it requires.
What Master Instructor actually requires
Because Master Instructor is earned rather than taught, the requirements are set out as prerequisites and certification numbers rather than a syllabus. To apply, you need to: Be a renewed, teaching-status IDC Staff InstructorHave been a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor for at least two yearsHold a current Emergency First Response Instructor rating. Have certified at least 150 PADI Divers, made up of a genuine cross-section of levels rather than one type of course repeated — including at least 50 Adventure Diver-or-higher certifications, 15 Specialty Diver certifications, 5 Rescue Divers, 5 Divemasters, and 5 Assistant Instructors. Stay within PADI's caps on certain certification types — for example, no more than 75 of the 150 may come from Discover Scuba Diving credits, and no more than 50 from IDC staffing credits. In short: it rewards instructors who've genuinely taught across the full PADI system, not just accumulated numbers in one area.
How training and staffing with Paul builds toward it
A lot of instructors get stuck not because they lack ambition, but because they lack the variety of teaching opportunities needed to build a genuine cross-section of certifications. Working with Paul at Alpha Divers — whether through staffing IDCs, teaching specialty courses, or running Divemaster and Rescue Diver training — gives you exposure across exactly the certification types Master Instructor requires, rather than being limited to a narrow slice of courses. Being based at a busy, established dive centre also means the volume and variety of real students coming through is there to teach, not something you have to go looking for elsewhere.
Setting out your own path
Because every instructor's current certifications and experience look different, the honest starting point is going through what you've already got against the requirements above and identifying the gaps — which certification types you need more of, and where staffing or teaching with us can fill them fastest.
