PADI Tec Diver Training with Alpha Divers: Tec 40, Tec 45, Tec 50

If you're ready to move beyond recreational limits, PADI's Tec program is the structured route into technical diving, building from Tec 40 through to Tec 50, with the option to add trimix along the way. Training through Alpha Divers means working through this progression on real dives, in real conditions, rather than just working through a manual.

Tec 40 — the entry point into technical diving

Tec 40 is where recreational diving ends and technical diving begins. You'll learn to plan and run limited decompression dives to 40 metres, using twinset cylinders with up to 50% oxygen (EANx50) to add conservatism.

Typical prerequisites:

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or qualifying certification)

PADI Enriched Air Diver (or qualifying certification)

PADI Deep Diver certification, or at least 10 logged dives to 30m or deeper.

Around 30 logged dives total, including a number of nitrox dives and dives deeper than 18m.

Minimum age 18.

A Diver Medical Form signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

Tec 40 training credits toward Tec 45 and Tec 50, so nothing here is wasted if you're planning to progress all the way through.

Tec 45 (with Trimix option) — extending to 45 metres

Tec 45 builds directly on Tec 40, extending your depth limit to 45 metres. You'll use twinset cylinders (back mount or sidemount) and learn to plan and run dives using up to 100% oxygen as a decompression gas.

Typical prerequisites:

Tec 40 certification (or qualifying certification).

PADI Rescue Diver, with CPR/first aid training within the past two years.

Around 50 logged dives, including a mix of nitrox dives and dives deeper than 18m and 30m.

Current medical statement.

Trimix option: At this level you can also choose to certify as a Tec 45 Trimix Diver, using helium-based breathing gas mixes rather than air or nitrox as your bottom gas. Trimix reduces narcosis and gas density at depth, which many divers find makes deeper technical dives noticeably more comfortable and manageable — worth considering even at this stage if you're already thinking about progressing further.Tec 45 is a prerequisite for Tec 50.

Tec 50 — the pinnacle of the entry-level Tec program

Tec 50 is the final course in PADI's core technical diving sequence, extending your limit to 50 metres/165 feet using two different stage/decompression cylinders, with mixes up to 100% oxygen for accelerated decompression.

Typical prerequisites:

Tec 45 certification (or qualifying certification)

PADI Rescue Diver, with CPR/first aid training within the past two years.

Around 100 logged dives, including a meaningful number of nitrox dives and dives deeper than 18m and 30m.

Current medical statement

Trimix option: As with Tec 45, you can complete Tec 50 using trimix (up to 40% helium content) in your back gas, certifying you to use those mixes within Tec 50 depth limits. For divers planning to go deeper still, Tec 50 with trimix is also the natural stepping stone toward further trimix training beyond the entry-level Tec program.
